The Harbor 25
A Boat For All Reasons
A Family Tradition of Sailing Schock Daysailers
By Jennie Gromoll
January 18, 2012
When I met Tom Schock at the Annapolis Boat Show a year ago, I found it hard to describe how much of an influence his boats have had on my family – for practically all of my life.
My father was an engineer with three daughters and a sporting wife. My husband and son are adventurous souls who love cruising and snorkeling in the Caribbean; and I am happiest, wherever we are, when the sails are well trimmed and we are flying over the deep blue waters!
New Years Resolutions Accomplished
New Years Day Race — Harbor 25 #33
by Rob Harring, South Coast Yachts
January 10, 2012
San Diego, California – I can't imagine a better start to a New Year than getting out sailing. It's an immediate test of all of your racing-related resolutions.
My New Year’s Resolutions were:
- I will focus on my job as skipper, and trust my crew to do their job.
- I will sail fast, and worry about hitting the shifts, not about my rating.
- I will have fun with my friends and family.

New Daysailer Plus Harbor 30 Debuts at San Diego Boat Show
San Diego, CA — The new Harbor 30, W.D. Schock's newest addition to its fleet of fine performance daysailers, will debut on January 26 at the Sunroad San Diego Yacht and Boat Show.
Designers Steve and Tom Schock dub the yacht a "Daysailer Plus," merging true cruising capability with daysailing features.
"We've combined traditional lines with nimble performance in a terrific yacht that sailors will love for decades to come," Tom said.
Three boats have already been ordered by knowledgeable sailors who recognize this boat's exceptional qualities.
The traditional lines belie modern features that simplify single-handed sailing. There is a self-tacking jib on a proven Hoyt boom. The hidden control lines lead to winch islands that are at arms length from the pedestal wheel. The ingenious mainsheet system keeps the large cockpit uncluttered. The result is a spacious haven without challenging obstacles for sailors and their guests.

This Boat Can Make Anyone Look Awesome!
December 20, 2011
My Enthusiasm Hasn't Waned Even After Over 3,000 Nautical Miles of Sailing!
Soon after he launched Harbor 25 #20 Cece's Rival in early July of 2008, Allan Wyckoff emailed to tell us how much he was enjoying sailing his new boat. “Just wanted to drop a note and say what a wonderful experience it has been sailing the Harbor 25 on San Francisco Bay.” The Harbor 25 is “a wonderful little cruiser with such BIG TIME performance. I've been sailing her every weekend and...
“I truly look forward to the next weekend when I can continue such joy of sailing.”

"Doubting Thomas" Buys a Harbor 25
by Mark Elder
November 29, 2011
My name is Mark Elder and I live in Lafayette, Louisiana. I sail out of a marina in Mandeville, Louisiana on the North Shore of Lake Ponchartrain. I am employed in the wholesale lumber business and, as evidenced by the horrible housing market, this equals a bad lumber market. Yet, these times of a historically bad market and extreme lack of consumer confidence do little to dissuade Tom Schock from extolling the wonders of the Harbor 25', eventually those statistics would also mean little to me.
One day in late November, 2009, I called the Schock Company and asked for sales. I was directly forwarded to Tom Schock, himself.
I was impressed to be put through to the Owner of the company.
How the Harbor 20 Saved My Club
November 15, 2011
During a recent Baldwin Cup Team Race at Newport Harbor Yacht Club, a prominent Newport sailor commented that “the Harbor 20 saved sailing at Newport. It has brought hundreds of sailors back into sailing.”
The Harbor 20 has also brought hundreds of members back to the club. Not just at NHYC but also at South Carolina YC, Santa Barbara YC, Annapolis YC, Balboa YC, Bahia Corinthian YC, South Shore YC, and more. The racing gives members something fun to watch. It gives them lots to talk about. And it provides a great opportunity to get involved.
Harbor 20: A Boat for All Ages
by Jon Pinkney
November 8, 2011
When the Harbor 20 was first introduced in 1997, many young adult sailors in Newport Beach viewed the boat as suitable for senior citizens only. That mindset was widely supported for approximately ten years but changed when Newport Harbor Yacht Club considered using the Harbor 20 for the Baldwin Cup invitational team race – a new and unique national team race regatta.
The format of this team race was a radically different approach from typical team race regattas, which are held in 420s, FJs, and Vanguard 15s. And using the Harbor 20 was met with a lot of skepticism.
Our younger expert team race sailors were paired with the older H20 boat owners and both learned a great deal. The older owners were introduced to the fast pace of team racing, while the younger sailors learned how to adapt from a dinghy to a keel boat. The success from the scrimmages morphed into the creation of the yacht club’s highly successful Baldwin Cup which is one of the most popular stops on the national team race circuit.
Schock 35 Nationals:
Michaelis’ Mako takes top honors in close fought regatta
Long Beach Yacht Club — Monday, 29 August 2011
Dave Michaelis’ road to winning the 2011 Schock 35 Nationals Sunday, hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club, was an uphill trek that paid off with only a one point separation between first and second place.
Michaelis’ boat Mako is named after the famous mako shark. The cartoon drawing on the side of the boat should be a warning to others that these guys are determined and aggressive... and it showed.
Competition fierce for “The Barneys”:
Lehman 12 Class Championships
Newport Harbor Yacht Club — October 14, 201
In one of the most competitive one-design regattas seen this year in Newport Harbor, 20 top one-design sailors turned out at NHYC to fight it out in the 56th running of the Lehman 12 Class Championships (aka “The Barneys”).
Once again, Jon and Gale Pinckney came out of retirement and were dominant — even with a 4-point average over the eight race series, they were still a dozen points ahead of runners-up Chris Raab and Jen Lancaster. Beside Raab and Pinckney, no other boat was able to tally all Top-10 finishes. With his win, Jon Pinckney is now tied with Jim Buckingham as having won the most ever Lehman Championships (Buckingham finished third overall in this year’s regatta).
“Blind Faith” and My Purchase of a Harbor 25
Written by Bob Rouleau
October 24, 2011
Dorval, Montreal Quebec - Purchasing a boat based purely on “Blind Faith” is practically unheard of; most people would not consider buying a boat that they have never seen nor sailed. But for one Canadian, Bob Rouleau, his leap of faith to a Harbor 25 proved to be an undeniably wise choice. Enjoy reading his story below.
Spinnaker Sailing the Harbor 20

Santa Barbara, California - Because there is no large sheltered sailing basin in Santa Barbara, we race our Harbor 20s in the “open ocean” of the Santa Barbara Channel, sometimes alongside boats as large as 65 feet. The courses that are typically set by the yacht club have long windward/ leeward legs, so to make the long downwind legs more interesting, Harbor 20 Fleet #4 decided to sail with spinnakers.
Bill & Diane Menninger Win 2011 Harbor 20 Class Championships
October 1 & 2, 2011
Newport Beach, California - The 15th Annual Harbor 20 Class Championship regatta was held October 1 & 2 at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club. The sky was clear, the winds were moderate, and the racing was fantastic.
Fifteen A sailors and fourteen Bs competed in a total of nine long windward/leeward races in winds that varied in direction and velocity but were steady enough to minimize the “luck” factor.

The Harbor 20 Class Continues to Grow by Leaps and Bounds
by Peter Haynes, National Harbor 20 Class President
September 29, 2011
Newport Beach, CA - With the continuing growth of the Harbor 20 A and B Fleets in Newport Harbor, the time has come to introduce a C Fleet.
I am very happy to announce that Fleet 1 now has a C Fleet! Tom Schock tells me this may very well be the first time a one-design keelboat fleet has had the depth and diversity to divide into three fleets.
Another achievement for the Harbor 20 Class!
40 years of Lido 14 Sailing
by Doug Hamilton
September 23, 2011
The time is July 1968. Life was full of excitement and the spirit of adventure. My job transfer as a U.C. Extension Horticulturist & 4H Advisor from Grass Valley to Alameda County was going well, and the family was settled into our new home in Fremont.
I decided it was time to fulfill my passion of owning a sailboat. With my oldest son, I took sailing lessons with the U.C. Yacht Club in Berkeley, bought Lido #463, joined the Lake Merritt Sailing Club, and became active.
The time period between purchasing the Lido in November 1962 and 1968 was busy as my family and I increasingly took part in Lido Fleet 3 activities. We entered every race on Lake Merritt, and also joined regional SBRA (Small Boat Racing Association) regattas in Monterey Bay, Redwood City, Palo Alto and Richmond.
An Action-Packed Season for South Carolina’s Harbor 20 Fleet
by Muffy Schulze
September 13, 2011
Hilton Head, SC - The Harbor 20 sailing season at the South Carolina Yacht Club runs from January through November and is topped off by the club’s annual Christmas party and awards presentation.
During this action-packed season, Harbor 20s are raced in invitational regattas and Wednesday evening one-design races. They are also used for the Thursday afternoon Adult Learn to Sail Group Instruction session, and for the club’s outstanding Junior Sailing Program. I bet Harbor 20s are seen on the water at least 150 days each year.
Harbor 25 Proves to be the “Perfect Size”
by Larry Shulman
September 08, 2011
We are often told that everything in life is a compromise. Nowhere do we hear that come up more often than when searching for the perfect boat. It can be argued that all boats have specific design goals. Let us backtrack a bit and find out why my Harbor 25 was the perfect fit, thus the perfect boat.
The first boat I sailed was a Sunfish while on vacation. I returned home and within a month was sailing a 28-footer on the Long Island Sound.
The next boat I owned needed to be large enough to accommodate my family of 6 children that was soon to grow to 8 children. Therefore, I had a sturdy 38-foot blue water boat built...
Harbor 20 Fleet #5 is formed at Annapolis Yacht Club
September 6, 2011
Annapolis, Maryland - Harbor 20 Fleet #5 is officially forming at Annapolis Yacht Club. With help from Peter Trogden, who is an active Harbor 20 sailor, and efforts from Howard Brooks, the new Fleet #5 Captain, Annapolis is well underway to establishing a distinguished fleet with lots of activity.
There are currently 7 Annapolis Yacht Club members and a total of 15 Harbor 20s sailing on Chesapeake Bay, with more expected to join as the organizing continues. Fleet # 5 is well on its way to creating a friendly social circle. Fleet sailing creates friendships and conversation with like-minded individuals that share a passion for sailing the same beautiful boat.
Harbor 20 Summer Party Recap
by Nik Froehlich
August 23, 2011
And what a Summer Party Fiesta it was! Lido Isle Yacht Club cleared its docks to welcome 31 Harbor 20 sailboats and about 117 Harbor 20 enthusiasts on a spectacular Sunday afternoon. We had 12 boats that were new to our events and perhaps even racing for the first time. So, after some basic rules and racing clinic time with Class President Peter Haynes, these new C Fleet skippers and guests had two races on the water.
Four Delightful Days Aboard a Harbor 25
by Jane Schock
August 4 - 7, 2011
I knew the Harbor 25 was designed and equipped for overnight cruising, but it wasn't until Tom and I spent four days and three nights aboard that I really came to appreciate all of the subtle details that make this boat so nice for cruising. The Harbor 25 is definitely easy to sail, it powers effortlessly, the cockpit is huge compared to most large cruising sailboats, and the interior is equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable overnight stay in your favorite cove. The attention to detail is amazing.
The New Kid on the Block Stars at the Rendezvous
Seattle to Port Ludlow
July 29 - 31, 2011
Seattle, WA - Signature Yachts' brand new Harbor 25 was launched just a few days before their All Fleet Rendezvous and turned out to be the belle of the ball. In an impressive field of large Beneteaus, Island Packets, and Hunters, the Harbor 25 received rave reviews and compliments galore.
The fun started on Friday, July 29, when Tom and Jane Schock hopped aboard Harbor 25 #38 and joined Robbie Robinson, Tori Patterson, and Chapin Day, all of Signature Yachts, in a small flotilla headed to the rendezvous.
Harbor 25 Sea Trials
by Walter Johnson
August 11, 2011
I recently had the opportunity to take a Harbor 25 out for several sea trials. They included sailing in a variety of venues - a Thursday night Beer Can race at Balboa Yacht Club, an ocean delivery from Newport Beach to Long Beach, a race to Catalina Island from Long Beach, and some local cruising with my family.
When I was first introduced to the Harbor 25, I was initially somewhat skeptical. I was a little taken aback by its classical styling, inverted transom, and classic short waterline. Most modern boats I have sailed have a plumb bow and a reverse transom to maximize waterline length. The Harbor 25 is a new design that does the exact opposite. It was not until I saw the boat out of the water that the modern keel with a bulb and spade rudder came to life - but it was the easily driven hull with flat runs that caught my eye. Along with the tall rig and self-tacking jib, it had all the makings of an easy boat to sail with the potential to get up and go. Soon, the classic lines started to feel right.
To Catalina and Back on a Harbor 25
by Karen Pierce
August 8, 2011
Newport Beach - A few weeks ago, my boyfriend, Walter, invited me to join him on a race from Long Beach to Catalina on a friend's Harbor 25 in one of the Island Series at Long Beach Yacht Club.
As a newbie sailor girl, I was both excited and nervous - excited because it would be my first ocean race and also my first trip to Catalina - and nervous because my experience has been primarily cruising and racing Lido 14s. Harbor 20s, and Shields in Newport Bay and Alamitos Bay during the past two years.
While I grew up in a racing family in England, I didn't get interested in sailing until moving to Newport Beach where I began watching the Harbor 20 races every evening from my home. They just looked so much fun and there was always a huge turnout! I then took a series of sailing lessons through Orange Coast College and eventually bought a Lido 14 as I thought it would be a great boat on which I could learn. After Walter invited me to sail with him in a Lido 14 race at Balboa Yacht Club and we came in first place, I was hooked!
1 Harbor 25 + 3 Buddies = Fun Offshore Racing
July 9, 2011
If you were to look up the word “Fun” in the dictionary, you would find the synonyms Enjoyable, Entertaining, Cool and Exciting. Add Easy to this and you have summed up a day on the water in a Harbor 25.
Steve Schock and his sailing buddies Adam Kline and Mike Puccio had just such a day sailing Harbor 25 #1 in the 28-mile Seal Beach to Dana Point Yacht Race on Saturday, July 9.
As Steve put it, “It was really fun to be on the water on such a beautiful summer day. And it was definitely enjoyable to sit in the cockpit on cushions within easy reach of all of the sail control lines. Lunch was delightful, and we had a great chance to visit. Racing in PHRF is always entertaining. It was cool to have a chance to fly the Code 0, and exciting to sail faster than much larger boats.”
Eric Kownacki Wins 35th Santana 20 Class Championship
Oklahoma City, OK
July 27-30, 2011
The 2011 Santana 20 Class Championship Regatta, which marked the 35th annual running of this prestigious event, was exciting from start to finish. At the end of the six- race series hosted by the Oklahoma City Boat Club, San Diego sailor Eric Kownacki, his middle man Andrew Kerr, and Bob Martin on the bow, took home top honors.
Eric Kowanaki’s win in this year’s event marks his second championship victory and his sixth time in the top three. When you look back at the history of this dynamic class, you realize what an awesome accomplishment this is.
Once a Sailor, Always a Sailor
Harbor 30 #2 will be going to Santa Barbara
July 6, 2011
Santa Barbara, California – “Once a Sailor Always a Sailor” definitely rings true for Francesca De Laurentiis and Fred Rice. They grew up in boating families and enjoy every minute on the water. Now they are looking forward with great anticipation to exciting new sailing adventures aboard Harbor 30 #2.
Fred and Francesca did quite a bit of shopping before selecting the Harbor 30. They considered larger boats — both power and sail — with more cruising amenities, but they knew from their experiences with larger boats that “big” is not always “better.” They considered smaller boats. but definitely want to do a little cruising. They were looking for a multi-purpose boat that would be tons of fun.
A Dream, 7 Wise Men & The Perfect Boat
The Origin of the Harbor 20
June 27, 2011
On a beautiful Thursday evening about fifteen years ago, a group of seven salty sailors at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club in Southern California were sitting in the bar wondering why so few of the yacht club members were sailing. This got them to dreaming about the perfect boat. One that would get husbands and wives, families and friends back on the water.
After many more discussions on this topic, the salty seven came up with the perfect solution. A brand new 20-foot keel boat now known as the Harbor 20.
Each of the guys in the group had been an extremely competitive sailor in his day, but found himself sailing less each season.

Another Fun Border Run — A Race to the Finish
by Tom Schock
April 9 & 10, 2011
Although we finished at almost precisely the same time as we did last year (2:08 a.m. this year / 2:05 a.m. last year), this year's Border Run race from Newport Beach to San Diego was quite different than last year's event. We had more wind for most of the racing, and then sat in a big hole off Point Loma, just a few miles from the finish line. So what looked like a record year turned into a slow beat to the turning mark and a reach to the finish line.
To make things more challenging, the Boarder Run committee gave us a rating of 138, a whopping 36 seconds per mile below our normal PHRF rating of 174, which we used last year. This put us at par with boats like the B25, J30, and Santa Cruz 27; and it meant we gave 12 seconds per mile to the Ranger 33 we were competing with. A pretty challenging rating!
2011 Run FROM the Border
The Garrett Family Delivery after the Border Run Race
April 15 - 18, 2011
The sail drive clicked into gear as our pretty, blue-hulled Harbor 25 Yemaya glided through the indigo, moonlit San Diego Bay and turned the corner around the submerged breakwater. With the clock just a little past 0200, it was the proverbial "darkest before the dawn" time, but we had just finished the Border Run Race; and for the second year in a row, we had a delightful, fast sail in a steady breeze down from Newport.
The plan after the race, as last year, was to throw me off on Shelter Island, and then for Tommy Schock and our third crew, Tommy's brother-in-law, Rik Hobbie, to make their way up the coast to home port. But, hey, my family didn't have plans over the kids' Easter Break. I pondered and slowly rubbed my chin for a moment - it was such a nice sail down...and the weather for the return looks sunny and warm...and the kids at 12 and 11 hadn't been exposed yet to the wonders of yacht deliveries. Why not make it a family, port-hopping adventure and learning experience?
Baldwin Cup 2011
April 8 - 10, 2001
Newport Beach, California - After three days of intense team racing with conditions ranging from glassed off drifting to 25 knot hail storms, the team of Doyle, Wells, Enright, Winston, Woodworth, Singer, Hanneman, Roeder from the New York Yacht Club rose to the top of the competition and claimed victory in the 2011 Baldwin Cup Team Racing Regatta. Newport Harbor Yacht Club hosted 11 teams from across the country and one team from the UK for over 125 races, This exciting event, complete with a full team of judges, was staged in Harbor 20s and sailed off the front dock of the club.
Spring Has Been Great in the Low Country
Harbor 20 Fleet 3 — South Carolina
by Muffy Schulze
April 5, 2011
Hilton Head Island, SC - The Low Country Challenge was a wonderful day of racing between Beaufort Yacht & Sailing, Savannah Yacht Club, and South Carolina Yacht Club.
Fleet One from Newport Harbor, California, came out to sail in the East/West Coast Challenge March 26 & 27. Great weather, great food, and new friendships were formed; and, luckily, Fleet 3 won back the trophy. Ned Nielsen and Tommy Webster lead our team to victory sailing in Acadia. A huge thank you to all who volunteered their time and talents, to those who opened their homes to our guests, and to all of our fleet members.
A New Dealer
A New Harbor 20 Fleet
March 18, 2011
Annapolis, Maryland — We are very pleased to announce that Brad Kauffman of Chesapeake Performance Yacht Sales has joined Annapolis Yacht Sales, one of the most popular dealerships on the Chesapeake.
Brad is actively growing the existing Harbor 20 fleet. Annapolis Yacht Sales sold two new Harbor 20s within a few days of Brad joining forces, and Harbor 20s #311 and #312 arrived from the factory in early November of 2010. The Harbor 20 was now eligible to compete in Annapolis Yacht Club’s Winter Frostbite Series, with six boats entered.
Harbor 30 Update
The Interior Will be Beautiful
March 25, 2011
The photo above offers a perfect birdseye view of the spacious interior of the new Harbor 30. You can see the swim step in the transom, the galley and main salon areas, and the v-berth forward. A spacious enclosed head is located opposite the galley.
Each piece of the interior is being custom-built into the hull of Harbor 30 #1. To ensure a perfect fit, the hull is kept in the mold throughout the process.
Once the individual components are finished, we will make the molds for each of the interior modules. Each section of the interior will be a one-piece fiberglass structure. This unique method of building the interior renders a seamless finish and an exceptionally strong hull.
14th ANNUAL W. D. SCHOCK MEMORIAL REGATTA
Forty-Seven Entries, New Format, New Technology, & Visiting Dignitaries
March 6 & 7, 2011
Under the direction of Jenn Lancaster and Charlie Underwood, the Newport Harbor Yacht Club hosted one of the most exciting Schock regattas ever. With six fleets and a total of forty-seven entries, it was a busy weekend in Newport Harbor.
Even in the dead of winter, the racecourse off NHYC can be a crowded place. To ensure good racing and fair winds for the Harbor 25s, Harbor 20s, and Lido 14s, we tried a new format this year that gave each fleet exclusive time on the racecourse.
2011 W.D. Schock Memorial Regatta
A Sailors Perspective
by Walter Johnson
March 7, 2011
Tom Schock and the Newport Harbor Yacht Club have been working with the various Schock fleets to address their concerns about boat design and work to increase participation in the Schock Memorial Regatta. The first thing they did was reduce the entry fee. Then, based upon feedback from the fleets, they decided to split the bay fleets into two flights — one for Harbor 20s and a second for centerboard dinghies such as Lido 14s. They decided that the Harbor 20s would race in the morning and the Lido 14s and other dinghy boats would race in the afternoon.
Harbor 25 “Red Head” Wins Cruising Class
South Bay Yacht Racing Club, Marina del Rey, California
January 23, 2011
The Champagne Series is SBYRC’s largest regatta and is one of Marina del Rey’s most important events. It is typically a two-day event with one-design classes and PHRF fleets racing windward/leeward courses off the Venice Pier in Santa Monica Bay. For the first time this year, the regatta included a Cruising Class that sailed Sunday only on a random leg course of about 14 miles.
This was my first time sailing a Harbor 25, and my good friend Warren joined me for a great day on the water. As is typical for this time of year, the race was sailed in light winds, from 3 to 6 knots. There were five boats in our Cruising Class – all of our competitors were 34 feet and larger
Harbor 30 Update
Hull #1 is Out of the Mold
February 10, 2011
The entire team at W. D. Schock Corp. is working diligently to launch Harbor 30 hull #1 this spring. We have made huge strides during the past few weeks.
The Harbor 30 is a sister vessel to the popular Harbor 14, Harbor 20, and Harbor 25. With their classic good looks and terrific sailing characteristics, we believe Harbor Sailboats are part of the best things in life – family friends, and fun.

SOUTH COAST YACHTS
New San Diego Dealer
January 10, 2011
We are excited to welcome South Coast Yachts as our new San Diego dealer. They will be stocking two new Harbor 20s and a new Harbor 25 at their waterfront office at Sunroad Resort Marina on Harbor Island in San Diego Bay. These boats will also be on display at the San Diego Sunroad Boat Show January 27 -30.
In discussing his decision to add our Harbor line, Barrett Canfield, president of South Coast Yachts, said, “We were looking for a high-quality, 20-30 foot, simple, elegant daysailer, and the bonus is that the Schock boats are built right here in Southern California. We’ve always respected the reputation of Schock boats and are very excited to introduce their Harbor 20' and 25' models in flag blue and stars and stripes blue to the San Diego sailing community.”
Lehman 12s Sail 55th Barney Lehman Championship Regatta
Newport Harbor Yacht Club
October 9 and 10, 2010
On October 9 & 10, the Lehman fleet hosted its 55th Barney Lehman Class Championships at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club. This year's event was as competitive as ever despite mostly light wind conditions and a combination of very high tides and a newly dredged back bay that resulted in unusually strong bay currents.
When the smoke cleared, Chris Raab and Jennifer Lancaster had a consistent two-day regatta in which they were never seriously challenged. Adam Deermount ranked second, with Past Champion Jim Buckingham in third.
Santa Barbara's Harbor 20 sailors have escaped to the ocean.
And they will be sailing with spinnakers!
October 14, 2010
Harbor 20 sailing in Santa Barbara has been a slow growth process, but there is no stopping it now.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger brought the first Harbor 20 to Santa Barbara about ten years ago. She ended up selling this one but bought another. Then in 2004 Capt. Helene Webb bought #210. Other Harbor 20s came and went, some sailed in PHRF and did very well against much larger boats. (See Helene's more detailed account of the fleet's growth – Harbor 20 Fleet Grows in Santa Barbara.)
Finally, in March of 2010, four or five Harbor 20 owners and their crews got together for their first fleet meeting. All agreed that one-design sailing would be great fun, but lurking below the surface was the feeling that a winged out jib just wasn't going to cut it.
