MARK & SARAH RYAN WIN 2010 LIDO 14 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Huntington Lake, California
July 12 - 15, 2010
If there is a lake on this earth that is absolutely perfect for sailing, it is probably Huntington Lake—the venue for this year's Lido 14 Class Championship Regatta. After one day of qualifying races and two days of championship racing, the new class champions are Mark and Sara Ryan, a brother and sister team from Alamitos Bay, California. Second place went to Kurt Wiese and John Papadopoulos of Newport Beach. Current class president and six-time champion Stuart Robertson was third. Kent Foster and Pam Fairley and Kelly Cantley and Kevin Thomas were forth and fifth.
Huntington Lake is a beautiful High Sierra lake located approximately 90 minutes northeast of Fresno, California. The lake sits at 7,000 feet above sea level and is nearly five miles long. Hot air in the San Joaquin Valley causes a thermal effect that produces consistent westerly winds of about 15 mph. These winds come up at almost precisely 11 a.m. every day during July and August and provide enough of a challenge to make the racing as good as it gets.
The regatta was a four-day event starting with registration, measuring, and practice sailing on Monday. On Tuesday, all 42 boats sailed in one fleet to determine which half of the fleet would qualify to sail in the championship Gold Flight and who would sail in the Silver Flight. As the current class champion, Stu Robertson automatically qualified; and at the end of the day, Kurt Wiese, Kelly Cantley, Steve Klotz, Mark Ryan, and Collin Orsini held the top five places.
OCS (On Course Side) scores of 22 each for Stu Robertson and Steve Klotz in the first race of the five-race, no throw-out championship series set the stage for a really exciting series for the Gold Flight. Stu was first to finish in the remaining four races, but Mark and Sarah held their cool to finish the series with an unbeatable 1-5-3-2-2. Race five was probably their most impressive. Stu got off to a perfect start and jumped out into the lead, while Mark came off the line in the middle of the fleet. Mark and Sarah steadily worked their way through the fleet to finish second. Their tactics were terrific and the way they handled the boat was picture perfect.
First place honors in the Silver Flight went to Ron and Nicole Runyon. Chris and Kit Lockwood, despite a DNF in the first race, were second. Kathy Reed and Cindy Heavrin took third in a tie-breaker with Matt and Maggie Nolan.

Like most Lido 14 events, the activities on shore were every bit as fun as the racing. Class Vice President Jonathan Carroll did a terrific job of organizing each day's activities. Breakfast was cooked on an open fire and served each morning by District 2 and Fleet 8. There was a wine and cheese party hosted by Butch and Kathy Michel. a potluck organized by Fleet 59, an annual meeting and dinner on Wednesday night, and a trophy dinner on Thursday night.
The new class officers elected during the annual meeting are Stuart Robertson, President; Jonathan Carrol, Vice President; Walter Johnson, Chief Measurer; Ron Runyun, Secretary; Jeanne Smith, Treasurer; Kurt Wiese, Director; Dave Carroll, Director; Kent Foster, Past President; Tom Schock, Honorary Director.
